top 10 2012 books

2012 was another fine year for Young Adult fiction. Here (in alphabetical order by author) are the pick of the 10 best from this year:
• The Look is an impressive tale of two sisters, one with cancer and one being lured into the world of modelling. (Chicken House)

• A gritty psychological thriller set in the psychiatric unit of a Young Offenders Institution. It's earthy and pacy. (Headline Books)
Drive By by Jim Carrington
Drive By is a story about a prank that goes horribly wrong. Carrington has written a realistic, gripping tale about teenagers in trouble. (Bloomsbury)
• Mortal Chaos is a tense and original children's Chaos Theory thriller. It starts simply with a butterfly startling a rabbit, which sparks a chain of events which affects people all over the world. (Oxford University Press)
• Saving Daisy, the follow-up to Being Billy, is another powerful and gritty drama about a damaged youngster. (Puffin)

• Daniel Handler, better known as Lemony Snicket, has written a poignant and witty tale of teen heartache, with gorgeous illustrations by Maira Kalman. (Electric Monkey)
• Poet Diana Hendry's memorable novel of children in a postwar seaside resort who are out to track down 'Left-Over Nazis', a game with devastating results. It was nominated for a Costa Award. (Bodley Head)
• There's a claustrophobic feel to Turf, a powerful and unsettling debut novel by John Lucas. Published a year after the riots, the book crackles with tension as Hackney-born Lucas explores gang life. (Bodley Head)
• An exciting psychological drama that tackles political terrorism, extremism and the impact of war on a family. (Bloomsbury)
• Horror writer Darren Shan's ambitious new 12-book series gets off to a cracking start with the opening book, Zom-B - a clever mix of horror, fantasy and realism (Simon & Schuster)
