Django Unchained Started As a 30-Page New Yorker.Style Essay?

16 hours ago | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »
Quentin Tarantino tends to have ideas for films that marinate for a long while before he actually gets around to making them. In an interview with Deadline,Harvey Weinstein spoke to how Django Unchained started: "Ten years ago, he spoke to me about how Birth of a Nation had been lauded and yet there was this strand of racism in it that had been ignored by major critics who’d put it at or near the top of their all-time best lists. I watched Birth of a Nation and suggested that he do a piece for The New Yorker, a 30 or 40 page treatise. You know Quentin; he can write like any film professor. He writes brilliant scripts; and trust me, I read pages of the treatise. It was astounding, the amount of research he put into the slave era." (Tarantino discusses the essay a bit here. He compares the book »

Contender Countdown: Is 'Argo' 'Driving Miss Daisy' or 'Apollo 13'?

1 hour ago | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »
It's strange times in Oscarland. "Argo's" wins at the PGA Awards and SAG Awards have jolted a best picture race that seemed squarely in "Lincoln's" corner.  Now, are all bets off or is it just a mirage we've seen play games with Academy Awards pundits before? To be fair, the PGA win wasn't that much of a surprise. Affleck and Clooney are well respected by their producing peers and, on paper, "Argo" wasn't necessarily a slam dunk box office hit (which makes it easy to reward).  Still, it was an impressive win as "Lincoln" could have easily taken the prize as »

2 hours ago | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »
Park City, Utah -- Not wanting "Twenty Feet From Stardom" to be over when it's over is a perfectly reasonable reaction to seeing the film. If, logistically, a few things fall into place, it doesn't have to be over. The Sundance-premiered documentary was a hit as soon as it flared up on the screens in Park City this month, with Weinstein label Radius-twc picking up the title in the first acquisition of the festival. The film featured several in-studio performances from greats likeDarlene LoveMerry Clayton and Lisa Fischer, and the filmmakers even had two of those tracks pressed onto »

The quirky rock band have composed a brand new song for Hyundai's latest commercial, a 60-second spot entitled "Epic Playdate" that's set to air during Sunday's big game. The slick new ad, which debuted earlier today on Billboard.com, sees an "average suburban family" going on a series of adventures in their new Hyundai sport-utility vehicle, all scored to the upbeat new Lips tune "Sun Blows Up Today" (the band members themselves also make an appearance). The song - which plays over scenes of the seemingly-innocuous clan engaging in a series of »

'New Girl' Creator Liz Meriwether on Her Comedy's Romantic Bombshell

Tuesday's New Girl delivered on its promise of a big development when a game of True American resulted in two characters getting surprisingly cozy. New Girlcreator and ep Liz Meriwether spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about the episode and its forthcoming fallout -- all of which comes with the obligatory spoiler alert. Chris Brown & Frank Ocean Alleged Brawl: Breezy Resurfaces With Cast and Private Instagram

3 hours ago | E! Online | See recent E! Online news »
Chris Brown has become a private man—for now. Frank Ocean's finger may have been "cut" after his alleged scuffle with Breezy outside of a Los Angeles studio on Sunday night, but Brown was spotted today with a cast on his right hand Tuesday, which might explain Ocean's recent desire to press charges against the singer. Normally, one would simply turn to Brown's Instagram for some more, um, insight on the situation, but he's not allowing that luxury anymore. "But... social media takes away the essence of why we are even special or icons. So with that, I'm detaching myself from that world," Brown posted before making his Instagram private. Yes, »

Eva Green Is A Dame To Kill For

Eva Green as a woman who can lead men to fight or die for her? Yeah, we can see that as a possibility. So can Sin City: A Dame To Kill For co-directors Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller, who have locked her in to play femme fatale Ava Lord. It’s been quite a search for the directors, who originally reached out toAngelina Jolie, but didn’t manage to make a deal. Now, though, they seem happy with the choice of Green to play Ava, a beautiful woman who leads photographer Dwight (Josh Brolin) to end up framed for the murder of her wealthy husband. Plus, to add insult to possible lethal injury, she left Dwight for the moneybags man in the first place…“Ava Lord is one of the most deadly and fascinating residents of Sin City,” Rodriguez and Miller said in a statement picked up by The Hollywood Reporter. »

Entourage Movie Scores Greenlight

We’ve been promised – or, depending on your feelings towards the show, threatened with – a movie version of Entourage for years now. Both creatorDoug Ellin and executive producer Mark Wahlberg have talked up the idea, but nothing has been solid on the studio front until now. Warner Bros changed that by giving the thumbs up to Vinnie Chase and the gang.If you’ve never caught an episode of the series, it ran on HBO from 2004 until 2011 and chronicled the career ups and downs of Mr Chase (Adrian Grenier) and his attendant friends/hangers-on etc. Chase lived the life of an up-and-coming Hollywood star, going from indie movie cred to stardom and, occasionally back down again amidst a bevy of sexy women and celebrity cameos. It was all loosely based on Wahlberg’s own rise to prominence and the friends from home who stayed by his side.Ellin, who »

4 hours ago | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »
The summer just got a little bit warmer. Sandra Bullock/Melissa McCarthy buddy comedy "The Heat" has been pushed from its April 5 release date into the thick of the summer moviegoing season. The film will now debut on June 28, putting it in competition with the comic-book sequel "Kick-Ass 2" as well as the Channing Tatum actioner "White House Down" - no doubt a vote of confidence on the part of studio 20th Century Fox. Directed by "Bridesmaids" helmer Paul Feig, "The Heat" follows two mismatched law-enforcement officers - Bullock's "uptight" FBI agent and McCarthy's "testy" Boston cop - as they »
